BRANCH ACTIVITIES

Since January 2009, the Montreal Branch has been supporting  a development project in Fiji. Some details follow.

VUTIKALULU  -  Centre for Sustainable Technology

The mission of this centre is to enable Fiji to develop its way out of poverty by inspiring, informing and enabling the rural people to use sustainable technology in their lives. The centre will research methods of rural development that are not only sustainable but are in keeping with the Fijian environment. It will provide training in organic agriculture and sustainable technologies such as alternative energy, water harvesting and sustainable building. These will be aimed at Form 5 and 6 students (15 to 18 years old) and it will fit within the technical vocational system of the Fijian Ministry of Education. For adults, short courses will be providing such as organic weed control, hillside farming, composting methane production and solar energy.

The centre is being developed in conjunction with the people of Nasirotu village in Waidina in the interior of the main Island of Fiji. This is a remote and fairly traditional village about 40 km from Suva, the capital. The project will be implemented in a number of phases. Phase 1 which is under way at present consists of clearing land and building dormitories, dining block and teaching blocks, and offices.
